Combination of Allari is back after 13 years with Laddu Babu. It is a melodrama directed by Ravi Babu. Allari Naresh has played the title role. Bhoomika is seen on screen after a longtime.
Laddu Babu (Allari Naresh) is a fat guy. Kota Srinivasa Rao is his ruthless father who insults him everyday by making fun of his overweight. Laddu Babu falls for Maaya (Poorna) at first sight. Murthy (Atulith), a 10 year old kid, wants to be a friend of Laddu Babu. As the latter has no interest in friendship with kids, Murthy teases Laddu Babu and irritates him. Laddu Babu realizes that Murthy won’t let him talk to Maaya unless he accepts his friendship. So they become friends. Murthy takes Laddu Babu to his home for few days of spend over. Rest of the film deals with why Murthy wanted Laddu Babu’s friendship and what happens to Laddu Babu’s love on Maaya.
Allari Naresh’s hard work is obvious in every scene of Laddu Babu. He must be appreciated for his efforts and for experimenting with his personality. Bhoomika is homely and played her part well. Master Atulith is the backbone of Laddu Babu and he is decent. Poorna is okay. Kota Srinivasa Rao is wasted in an irritating role. Brahmanandam, Ali, MS Narayana, Raghu Babu, AVS and Jayaprakash Reddy played guest roles but they couldn’t make us laugh.
Cinematography is the only highlight of Laddu Babu. Chakri once again disappoints with his music and BGM. Screenplay is written by yesteryear writer Satyanand. Just like him, his screenplay too belongs to older generation. Marthand K. Venkatesh is helpless as an editor. Ravi Babu’s direction is pale, but he has shown his mark in picturization of songs.
Right from the title cards to central plot, Laddu Babu is heavily inspired from Rohan Sippy’s Bollywood flop ‘Kuch Naa Kaho’. Though KNK was a disaster, Rohan Sippy dealt the story of emotions in a matured way. Ravi Babu’s version of those emotions are totally misfired. Laddu Babu is a comedy film which fails to make you laugh. It is also an emotional melodrama which fails to touch your heart.
Audience expect comedy from Allari Naresh. Showing him in a depressing role is the first wrong step. You can do it successfully when your script is so strong that it makes audience forget Allari Naresh and show them the character called Laddu Babu. But Ravi Babu has taken a flop story line and messed it up further.
Every important scene of Laddu Babu is predictable. We can predict the climax during interval. More than predictability, insensibility has done more harm to Laddu Babu. The film is based on a kid’s wish. When audience feel that the wish is insensible, nothing can save a film.
A deleted scene between Kota Srinivasa Rao and Venu Madhav is played during end titles. That is the only good scene in Laddu Babu and I wonder why it is deleted.
Laddu Babu reminds you of Tamil director Vikraman films where hero is abused and insulted by everyone but the hero expects everyone’s well being. It is undoubtedly the baddest film in Ravi Babu’s career. Allari Naresh’s effort went in vain. Kota Srinivasa Rao is shown as a fool who gives missed call to gas agency and customer care. Irony is that Laddu Babu is a ‘missed call’ given by Ravi Babu and audience are definitely not going to call him back. Help yourself by skipping Laddu Babu.
